NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL & PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENTS

An assessment can explain patterns and changes in cognitive functioning, and can be a vital tool in creating an effective treatment or intervention plan to address an individual’s unique needs. At The Clinic on Dupont, we offer neuropsychological and psychoeducational assessments for children, adolescents, adults and seniors. An assessment may be recommended when there is a medical history (i.e. brain injury, tumour, stroke) or when changes in cognitive functioning suggest that dementia or other neurodegenerative conditions may be present. It may also be indicated to assess a student’s learning and development profile, so that appropriate recommendations can be shared with teachers and other educators.

These assessments involve a variety of tests that evaluate cognitive functioning and screen for possible exceptionalities and impairments. Following an initial consultation and review of relevant records, testing is typically administered over one or more days, and results are shared in a feedback session. A formal report will then be provided, which the individual can choose to share with his/her health or education professionals.

Assessments for Children and Adolescents

Neuropsychological Assessments

In the case of children, a request for this type of assessment is often made when the child or adolescent has a medical history, such as a brain injury, tumour, stroke or other neurological condition. This type of assessment provides a more comprehensive picture of a child’s or adolescent’s cognitive functioning, and may provide additional valuable information to further tailor recommendations to the individual’s developmental and learning needs.

Psychoeducational Assessments

A psychoeducational assessment is an evaluation of a child’s intellectual and academic functioning. A child may complete a psychoeducational assessment when a learning disability is suspected and school accommodations are sought.

Neuropsychological Assessments

In the case of adults, neuropsychological assessments allow for accurate diagnosis of cognitive and memory impairments, and also facilitate treatment intervention for dementia and other pathological changes in functioning during the aging process.
