Family Counselling Toronto

Family relationships can be a source of love, support and connection, but these bonds can also be stressed by ongoing conflict, tension, misunderstanding, or unmet needs. Many issues can strain family relationships, including divorce, infidelities, substance abuse, grief, and parenting stresses.

Our families help us to create the blueprint through which we understand and relate to others, so working through resentments and conflict, and developing healthy coping and communication skills, is essential to ensuring a family’s happiness over the long term. The interdisciplinary approach at The Clinic on Dupont allows for a customized approach to meet the unique needs of each family.

Having clinicians who specialize in family systems, child psychology and couples counseling allows us to target the issues causing conflict and to provide evidence-based solutions that focus on the wellness of whole families and the individuals who compose them.

What types of problems are resolved through family therapy?

Families benefit from therapy for a wide range of family difficulties. Child and adolescent behavioural issues, academic concerns, aging parents, conflict, addiction, financial problems, grief, chronic illness, and mental health conditions are just a few of the reasons people seek family therapy in Toronto.

What symptoms might individuals experience as a result of family difficulties?

Family problems can be extremely distressing. Not only can they affect family relationships, they can also be detrimental to the wellness of individual family members. Even those family members who aren’t directly involved with the problem may also be affected.

Individuals may experience stress, anger, anxiety, sadness, difficulty concentrating, exhaustion, changes in eating or sleeping patterns, substance use, or abuse, among other symptoms.

How do family difficulties affect relationships?

Family problems can be detrimental to family relationships. Family difficulties can result in distrust, frequent bickering, refusal to communicate, children and adolescents who run away, separation or divorce, and estrangement from family members.

At The Clinic on Dupont, our results-oriented family therapists can help your family resolve its problems. Your family will develop new insight and skills. As a result, your family will be better equipped to deal with future issues and avoid escalation. This will result in a happier, healthier family and improve the wellness of family members.

What causes family problems?

There are numerous causes of family problems. Financial difficulties may arise from the loss of a job, a medical emergency, or money management issues. You might be experiencing child behaviour problems that have developed from a child’s emotional or behavioural issues, parenting styles, among other reasons. Family squabbles can result from poor communication, personality conflict, or any number of reasons.

Your licensed family therapist can help you get to the root of your problem and resolve it.

How are family difficulties treated?

Our family counselling consists of evidence-based psychotherapies. These include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Psycho-education, Structural family therapy, Strategic therapy, Narrative therapy, Supportive family therapy, Transgenerational therapy, Therapy for communication issues, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).

Will family members meet individually with our therapist in family counselling?

Your licensed family therapist will meet with your family together and may also want to meet with each family member privately. Individual meetings generally take place within the same therapy session. Your therapist may also meet with subgroups of your family. These meetings provide everyone the opportunity to be more open so your therapist can better help your family.

Will our family therapist represent a particular family member?

When you participate in family therapy in Toronto at The Clinic, your therapist’s goal is to help your family as a whole heal from its difficulties. Your therapist will take an objective approach, so each family member is heard, understood, and learns how best to deal with the problems.

What if I can't get a family member to come to family counselling?

If a family member doesn’t want to participate, your licensed family therapist can provide advice on how you to encourage the unwilling relative. If that doesn’t work, your family therapist can still work with you and the rest of your family to resolve or more effectively deal with the difficulty for which you’re seeking therapy.

How long does family therapy take?

Families enter therapy for a wide variety of problems, so the length of treatment varies. However, many families can experience tremendous improvement with their difficulties within 8 to 12 weeks.

Do kids participate in family counselling?
